Okay, so Mike and I realized that although we were truly stoked about getting married, we weren't so keen on the actual wedding planning. After creating lists (one for a Whitehorse wedding and another for a Winnipeg wedding) including possible wedding and reception locations, duties, roles, $, expectations, accommodations, schedules and so on, we realized planning a traditional wedding wasn't very fun. It was time consuming, and the wedding itself would be $ consuming. It seemed as though we were going to be paying a lot of money to do a whole bunch of work with time we didn't have to spare.
One day while sitting on our couch, lists of wedding preparations in hand, Mike & I looked at each other and it was decided at that moment: a destination wedding! Mike had mentioned this idea while soaking in his parents hot tub one night shortly after he proposed, but we hadn't really discussed it seriously since. We realized this was the best plan for us! Mexico, here we come!!!
Luckily, some of our friends and family immediately jumped on board! This made us so happy! Of course, others couldn't come along, which was disappointing, but we vowed to take many pictures and videos in order to bring the wedding to them this summer!
We decided to make the Mexican vacation into a surprise for Josh and Jay, and had to keep it a secret until Christmas Day (which was a little hard for some of us. I think Chester received a few bonks on the head from Judy! lol!) Mike & I created a Christmas Scavenger Hunt with the twelve days of Christmas theme, in which the kids had to find 12 clues, one after another, which lead to their surprise. Mike photoshopped a picture putting Josh and Jay's faces onto the bodies of two Mexican dancers. We slipped the picture with the title "Jay and Josh in Mexico" into the front sleeve of a DVD case and placed pictures of the Mexican resort and information inside!
The Scavenger Hunt was a blast and the kids really got into it, competing against each other and racing to the clues' destinations by the end! When the final clue lead them to the DVD case, they were both confused until they looked inside and found: Merry Christmas Josh and Jay! You are going on a 2 week vacation to Mexico during Spring Break at the all-inclusive resort Palladium Vallarta. They were both excited. Jay started waving her hands around and Josh was a little more shocked. It also said, Guess who else will be there and what we will be doing. Jay immediately said, "We're getting married!" Josh said, "What?" Jay repeated herself. Josh asked, "You're getting married in Mexico?" We answered, "Yes!" Then he asked, "Are other people coming?" We answered, "Yes, 19 people, including us, so far." Then both of them started getting even more excited. The funniest part was when Josh looked at the DVD cover again and asked, "How did you get this picture?" He was so shocked and confused. It was hilarious! Then he realized Mike photoshopped it. You can watch it on the video below. Afterwards, they began bombarding us with questions regarding the Mexico plans and we sat down and discussed our vacation together before even considering the inevitable Christmas-present-opening extravaganza.
Mike and I asked Josh and Jay to be the Best Man and Maid of Honour. They both said yes. Jaylene was excited about picking out a "pretty dress"! Josh later took Mike aside and expressed that he was so honoured that his dad would choose him to be the Best Man.
Before we knew it, Dad bought me a wedding dress in Kamloops and Jay chose her Maid of Honour dress online. Mike and Josh had their white, linen suits custom-made and bought Abercrombie & Fitch "wedding" flip-flops. All items were sent to us! We had to do a lot of communicating back and forth with our travel agent and some of our guests, since most of us were traveling as a large group. There were a few bumps along the way, but all worked out. We also had to correspond with our wedding coordinator through email, which was actually quite easy and productive.
Then, it was as if March had been thrust upon us. Mike, Josh, Jay and I began our packing and made preparations for our house and Deja... There were excessive phone calls and emails with our family and friends regarding the plans and our excitement. Of course, there were difficulties getting Josh and Jaylene's identification and paperwork from their mother, but this too worked out in the end. (Plus, with the wedding preparations being so easy, a bit of stress simply made the vacation feel a little more deserved!) And suddenly we were off to MEXICO!!!
